Multi-instrumentalist Justin Buckingham has performed with Sydney and Canberra based groups such as Lyre Byrdland, The Kinetic Jazz Orchestra, The Divergence Jazz Orchestra, The Jordan C Thomas Quintet, Bump City, Revolution Incorporated, Fat Possum and Zackerbilks as well as played pit orchestras, stage shows, and studio sessions. His versatile work encompasses the three woodwinds of saxophone, clarinet, and flute in a range of styles such as jazz, latin, reggae, funk, gypsy, contemporary, and classical. In addition, two new projects are underway – one a duo on clarinet with national award winning accordionist Anton Wurzer, and the other on saxophone in the Justin Buckingham Quintet, a band whose repertoire is geared towards the swing dance community.
Justin possesses a degree in jazz performance but also an honours degree in music education making teaching and learning as much a focus of his professional career as performance. He has extensive experience teaching students from primary to tertiary in a wide range of localities across Sydney and Canberra and for 5 years was the conductor of the Sydney University Big Band.
Topics of study for lessons include beginner, intermediate, advanced; primary, secondary, university, and mature-age; saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone), flute (and piccolo), and clarinet (plus bass clarinet); jazz improvising, repertoire, arranging, composing and style; classical including AMEB exams and theory; contemporary styles including funk, reggae, rock, folk, etc; maintenance, buying, and gear.
